Welcome to Legos

Insects Galore
Lego’s Create Insects
Lego’s first theme for the year is insects. Students have been busy learning about different insects like praying mantis, crickets, butterflies, meal worms, etc. Ask your child to name the three body parts of an insect. As you can tell from the slideshow, students had fun making these three body parts for the insect masterpiece that they will be creating over the next couple of weeks.
Lego’s Display Insects
Soon after creating insects, students brought to school two insects that they had caught at home. Students pinned their insects in a box. With the guidance of our speaker, Shane Schaake, students learned that insects needed to be pinned in certain ways. Some insects are so small that they need to be displayed in a liquid suspension while other insects ‘ have large wings that need to be displayed in a certain way so that viewers can appreciate the variety of insect wing span widths. Dragonflys, butterflies, cicadas, katydids, and beetles are just a few of the insects displayed by students.
P.S. Ask your child about the butterfly houses that have found homes in the three Lego’s Rooms.
Westmoreland Elementary School

Welcome to Legos! For us, Legos means building knowledge for the future. All Lego students work together to learn everyday and we have different groups to organize ourselves:
- Homeroom Groups
We begin and end our day in homerooms. Your child will most likely be in his/her homeroom for morning Reading and Math instruction. You will conference with your child's homeroom teacher, and all questions/concerns should be directed to this teacher.
- Legs and Os Groups
Your child has been placed in one of these groups for the following activities: P.E., Music, Computer, Counseling, and Library.
- Red, Yellow and Blue Color Groups
These three groups are used during our afternoon thematic learning time.
We are so excited about the upcoming year and are looking forward to working and learning with your child. We think you will find Legos to be a caring, supportive environment for your child. We welcome any and all feedback from our parents. After all, you are your child's first and most important teacher. Let's make this a great year!
Again, if you have any questions, please contact your child's homeroom teacher.
