Spanish Students Tour Costa Rica

by Sara Miller

On June 25, twelve Rock Creek high school students and two sponsors travelled to Costa Rica for eight days to study Spanish and Costa Rican culture.

Students visited a coffee plantation, played soccer in the shadow of the Arenal Volcano,  swam in a hot spring and the Pacific Ocean,  and learned how to salsa dance.  Also, since much of Costa Rica is covered with rainforests, students ziplined, rode horses, hiked, and boated through this unique ecosystem, seeing howler monkeys, sloths, iguanas, caimans, snakes, and exotic birds.

In addition, the students stayed in homes with families who spoke only Spanish.  While practicing their language skills, the students tasted new foods, played games, shopped, and attended a soccer match.

Students who participated in this trip were: Shelby Adams, Mandi Blenn, Kiley Brown, Bailey Elliott, Nolan Fike, Katie Good, Spencer, Klocke, Rachel Lewman, Ashley McDaris, Logan Miner, Chelsea Renner, and Joseph Wilson. The sponsors were Sara Miller, Rock Creek Spanish teacher, and Kelly Hammond, a former Rock Creek student teacher. The next Spanish trip will take place in the summer of 2012.
